New Jersey Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver announced on Monday that the legislature will vote on an increase in the state’s minimum wage within the next few weeks.

People who work hard shouldn’t be forced to live in severe poverty, and you don’t have to make the minimum wage to know you can’t live in New Jersey on $7.25 an hour. Add to that the brutal cuts that Governor Christie has levied on the poor – like slashing the Earned Income Tax Credit, raising bus & train fares, and cutting affordable health care for parents – and it’s clear working families are getting the squeeze.
Take action now to make sure legislators stand strong for working families.
Speaker Oliver’s proposal is a step in the right direction. The new minimum wage would be $8.50 an hour. Even better, the minimum wage will rise each year to match the state’s cost of living.
This is going to be a big lift for legislators, and they’re sure to face opposition from Governor Christie and big business. It’s up to us to show them that there’s a groundswell of support for a fair minimum wage in the Garden State.

New Day Care Scholarship Opportunities!
In order to be considered for a scholarship*, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria:
- Have a dependent child (children) in need of dependent care
- Parents must work outside of the home
- Use a qualified child care provider either licensed by the state, or on file with the IRS
- Applicant must be a member of UFCW or RWDSU in good standing for one year
- Scholarship winners from the prior year are not eligible for the following year, but may apply in future years. (more…)
